Sliding Window Types and Configurations
A slider opens sideways on top and bottom tracks, with no crank, hinge or balance to wear out. Because nothing has to be lifted, it suits openings that are wider than they are tall.

Two-Lite Horizontal Sliders
The standard slider has two panels, one fixed and one that moves. That means only half the window opens. In exchange you get a simple, durable unit that guides rate as inexpensive to install and low-maintenance. HomeGuide's 2026 range for an installed slider runs $300 to $2,300, with size and frame driving where a job lands.

Three-Lite End-Vent Sliders
A three-lite window has a fixed center pane and an operable sash at each end that slides toward the middle. The ends can be equal thirds, or the center can be twice as wide as each end (1/4-1/2-1/4) for a bigger unbroken view. In a kitchen, you can open only the end nearest the stove or sink. Makers also offer three-lite sliders with a transom above.
Single vs Double Sliders
- Single slider: one panel moves, the other is fixed.
- Double slider: both panels move, so you choose which side opens. Some double units also tilt in, which lets you clean both sides of the glass from inside.
- Lift-out sashes: some sliders let you lift the moving panel off its track for cleaning.
On a single slider, the outside face of the fixed panel is the hard part to clean, a drawback guides list for sliders in general. On an upstairs window, a double or tilting slider avoids that.

Sliders Where a Crank or Tilt Sash Won't Fit
An awning or casement sash swings out from the wall when it opens, so it can block a deck, walkway or porch. A slider stays inside its frame. It's also the natural fit for a wide, short opening. The trade-off is the center rail where the panels overlap, which interrupts the view. Low basement sliders are their own job, with different sizes and prices; see basement windows.

Sliding Window Replacement Checklist
Locks and limiters
Slider locks on the track use a thumbscrew or lever; a window wedge limits how far the panel opens. Upstairs, check a low sill against the fall-protection rule before relying on a wedge.Bedroom windows
Only half of a two-lite slider opens, so measure the open panel, not the whole frame, against the egress size rule.Changing the window type
Swapping a pair of old double-hungs for one slider changes the look of the wall. Compare costs and looks on the double-hung windows page first.Older houses
Taking out an old painted window in a pre-1978 house counts as lead-safe work, even when a vinyl slider goes in.Tracks
Ask how the track drains and whether the rollers can be replaced without replacing the window.
